Mastery is the product of setting time aside and getting down to business on a regular basis. It is writing the novel even when we don’t feel like it. It is practicing the guitar even when we’re tired. The key here is that there will never be the “right time.” It will never be convenient to turn off Netflix and practice Spanish for an hour. It’s a lot easier to have a whiskey on the rocks and eat ice cream than to sit down and map out your dream business. But success in finding your true calling, like physical exercise, comes from constant repetition. In his book, The War of Art, author Steven Pressfield echoes the importance of repetition: “When we sit down day after day and keep grinding, something mysterious starts to happen. A process is set in motion by which, inevitably and infallibly, heaven comes to our aid. Unseen forces enlist in our cause; serendipity reinforces our purpose.” Jerry Seinfeld says his success in part came from writing one joke per day, whether he felt like it our not, he wrote a joke and drew an “x” on the calendar that day. This is also consistent with taking baby steps toward where you want to be. Rather than focus on the often daunting end result, focus on sitting down each day to take on the little things. Write your one joke, write your one page in your novel, practice Spanish for an hour. Sit down and do it every day. If you wait for the “right time” you won’t do it, resistance will get the better of you and you will regret it..
